THREE local musicians raised over £2000 for the NSPCC when they gave a concert at Nettlecombe Church on Saturday September 28.

An audience of more than 100 enjoyed songs presented by the Rev Ben Flenley, the Quantock Towers Rural Dean, Lance Moir and Christopher Legrove on the piano.

Sondheim’s Comedy Tonight set the scene, followed by songs from Flanders and Swann, Tom Lehrer, Gilbert and Sullivan, Noel Coward and Gershwin, together with classical songs from Mozart, Schubert, Britten and Tosti.

NSPCC South Quantocks branch chairman Frances Vail thanked the three performers, and Richard and Lucy Devitt for making possible the use of the church, plus all the hard-working committee including Angela Orchard-Lisle who had been the main organiser of the evening.

The fundraising is for the training of volunteers to respond to the many calls from children – approximately two calls every minute, 24 hours a day.

But one in three calls cannot be answered because of a shortfall in the number of volunteers – who are vital to help any child who plucks up the courage to phone. Further funding is needed to overcome this shortage of trained staff.
