A local authority is to monitor late night showings at a town centre cinema to make sure there is no noise at the end of films.

The multi-screen cinema at Yeovil's new leisure centre has been given a Cinema Licence which allows it to stay open until 3am over weekends.

This has caused some concern among town councillors, who were afraid that late night noise could become a problem when filmgoers left the premises.

They also wanted to know whether the cinema bar would be open during the same hours as the auditoriums.

Town councillors first heard about the opening hours when consulted by the licence-giving authority - South Somerset District Council.

The assistant town clerk was instructed to forward town councillors' concern to the district, which has since replied through its principal administrator.

In a letter to the town council, the principal administrator writes: "The late opening of the premises would only happen on a small number of occasions when there were major films that had just opened.

"Only two thirds of the auditoriums would be open for these late showings. I have agreed with the applicant that they will notify us when they wish to use the late opening times so that we can monitor any noise disturbance.

"Should there be any complaints, then the late hours can be looked at again."
