An agreement has been reached between Yeovil Town Council and Somerset County Council about officer attendance at meetings.
Members of the town council's buildings and civic matters committee have expressed a wish to have county council officers on hand when traffic issues are discussed.
County councillors Tim Carroll and Cathy Bakewell attended a meeting last week and explained that there were 16 town councils and around 300 parish councils in Somerset, which meant it would be impossible to field officers for all meetings.
Town councillors appreciated this, but argued Yeovil was the third or fourth largest town in the county and deserved more attention than it got.
A letter sent to the county council prior to the meeting explained: "In the absence of a highway officer, it is difficult to deal with issues in an effective and expeditious matter as technical questions or points of clarification often have to be referred to the next meeting. Members of the public attending our meetings are understandably confused and frustrated by the inevitable delays in dealing with these issues.
"The committee only meets six times per year and, for administrative ease, arrangements could be made for all traffic regulation orders and other highway issues to be included at the beginning of the agenda."
The two county councillors suggested that officers could be made available for two meetings a year, but after further discussion a compromise of three meetings a year was accepted and agreed.
