Colourful church flower festival
THE theme for this year’s Selworthy Church Flower Festival, which is taking place from Friday, August 22, through to Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, is ‘colours’.
The festival is open each day from 10 am to 5 pm and entry is free, with donations welcome to help fund the maintenance of the grade one listed historic building.
There will be a book stall, and on the Sunday at 4 pm a Songs of Praise service.
All are welcome and it is hoped that the many and varied floral displays will bring colour to the lives of all who visit and experience the views across the vale toward Exmoor.
For those who are new to the area, Selworthy is signposted up the hill, about half-way between Minehead and Porlock on the A39.
There is a car park opposite the church and a free National Trust car park about 100 yards further along on the left.
Selworthy Green, with its thatched cottages, is just below the church, and a public toilet is provided by the trust through the gate below.
Sally Bate and Penny Webber, co-ordinators.
Morris dancing out
THE West Somerset Morris will be dancing out at Halsway Manor at 8 pm on Thursday, August 21, followed by a visit to the Carew Arms, Crowcombe, at 9 pm on the same evening.
Morris practices will begin again in the autumn following the annual summer dance outs and will be held every Thursday evening in the St Audries Village Hall starting at 7.30 pm.
Anybody interested in joining the group, either as a dancer or a musician, should make contact by calling 07853 546777 or emailing to [email protected].
Heart of Exmoor amble
ON Wednesday, August 20, Amble not Ramble heads to Webbers Post, in the heart of Exmoor, meeting in the car park at 10.30 am.
The walkers will be able to see both Dunkery Beacon and Horner Wood, and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
The bell heather will still be out and the purple ling is just coming out.
For people not familiar with Webbers Post, it is suggested they follow a car, as the best way to be shown the route ‘up the combe above Horner’ and ‘on the slopes of Dunkery’, or ‘on the road to Cloutsham’.
Anybody who needs direction should call before Tuesday.
Amble not Ramble is a walking group specially designed for people with memory loss, lack of mobility, and/or just loss of confidence, or anybody who enjoys a relaxed pace when walking.
The walk will be a maximum of one hour in a friendly group and ends with tea and coffee.
Amble not Ramble walks are run by Minehead Dementia Action Alliance, which aims to help people and their carers live well with dementia.
The alliance asks that vulnerable adults be accompanied by a carer.
For more information or directions to the start, call Emily on 01643 821756 or email [email protected].
Walks take place whatever the weather.
