A HOST of unsung local heroes who have worked tirelessly to help others and improve the quality of life in their communities have been honoured at an awards ceremony in Williton.
Organised by West Somerset Council, the annual parish champions' scheme honoured both individuals and groups who had either helped others, tended open spaces or contributed to their community.
The winners were recognised at a ceremony hosted by district council chairman Cllr Eddie May and presented with certificates to mark their achievements.
The 2010 parish champions were: Rev Richard Allen for services to Williton, Sue Bowner for services to 1st Minehead Girls' Brigade, Ann Carter for services to Watchet, Bernard Foster for services to Selworthy and Minehead Without, Lynda Hatch for services to 1st Alcombe Brownies, Sarah and Allen Loveday for services to Stogursey, Phillip Mason for services to Carhampton, David Milton for services to Watchet, Chris Nelder for services to Dulverton and Joan Nicholson for services to Dunster.
Cllr May thanked everyone who nominated people for the awards and said he was delighted to be able to honour their achievements.
"It is a privilege to meet people who have shown an extraordinary commitment to improving the lives of others.
"They have worked hard and without any expectation of reward, which shows they are truly special people.
"Our communities are lucky and West Somerset is a richer place for having local heroes who give so much time and effort to improve life for everyone."
