SIR — I would like to reply to SW Knowles' letter in which he expressed his disgust that the Minehead Royal British Legion in Bancks Street was not flying a Union Flag to mark the Normandy landings on D-Day (Your Letters June 13). Perhaps Mr Knowles did not notice that there is currently scaffolding around the building, which prevents us flying any additional flag other than the RBL flag, which stands proudly over the RBL HQ for Minehead. Also, these much-needed roof repairs have been financed by the RBL Club, which Mr Knowles refers to as a glorified drinking hole. It is very unfortunate that Mr Knowles was not in possession of these facts. However, flying a flag is not the only way the RBL branch in Minehead has been remembering D-Day, nor indeed this year's centenary of World War One. He may be interested to know that Minehead RBL has provided memorabilia to the museum, and church, to marks this occasions, and there are further events planned throughout the year. Mr Knowles has sadly completely overlooked the Minehead RBL Poppy Appeal, which has raised over £50,000 in the last three years. Every penny was raised by the many volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year and are members of the branch and club. All funds raised by them, with the much appreciated support of many local businesses, has gone to help veterans from all conflicts with their rehabilitation and welfare needs. And where servicemen and women have fallen, it takes care of their immediate family. Look out for the Minehead World War One centenary lapel pin we have specially designed to mark this occasion and raise further funds this year. As a note for Mr Knowles' diary, on October 24 this year's Somerset and Bristol Poppy Appeal launch will take place in Minehead. This will take a tremendous amount of planning, as it will include the wonderful West Somerset Railway's 40 Commando Steam Train, the kind co-operation of Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club, and again, numerous branch and club volunteers. The RBL branch also makes donations to Dunkirk House retirement home in Bishops Lydeard. It provides Standard Bearers for special occasions, attends funerals of local ex-service people, and makes educational visits to local schools, all on a voluntary basis. I therefore feel Mr Knowles' comments are an unfair reflection on the good works the Minehead RBL branch, club and Poppy Appeal do every year. I would warmly invite Mr Knowles to join us as we always need new members - he will then see we are not just about flying flags and drinking. Jacky Hardman, Treasurer, Minehead Royal British Legion Club.
