Cocaine targeted in drugs scanning AN increase in the use of cocaine in West Somerset prompted police and local licensees to join forces to drive home the message that drugs were not welcome in the district. Regular officers and special constables carried out drug screening using a device called an ion itemiser at both Minehead's Wellington Hotel and the nearby Butlins holiday resort. Numerous people were scanned and some were searched. A 33-year-old man found in possession of a white powder, believed to be a Class A drug, was arrested and later cautioned. Another man was arrested and cautioned for possession of cannabis. Police praised both premises for volunteering to take part in the exercise, which was designed to ensure both venues were drug-free. Sergeant Bob Carey said local police were working in partnership with licensees to send out the message that recreational drug use would not be tolerated, especially within in the pubs and clubs of Minehead. He said: "We hope other licensees will also join us in similar exercises to be run again in the future. "There is an increased use of cocaine in West Somerset which is mirrored throughout the South West. "There are real health issues connected with the use of this drug." He said anyone with information about people dealing in cocaine or other controlled drugs should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
