MINEHEAD'S Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee clock tower project has won recognition by the British Library and become a registered charity.
The project group is raising funds to enable the construction of a clock tower to be built on Minehead seafront.
Now the British Library has included the project in its archive of Queen's Diamond Jubilee projects. Charitable status will enable the group to tap into funding streams that were previously denied.
Funds have recently been boosted by a £2,000 anonymous donation and by the promise of £500 from a local service organisation.
The clock tower group has been busy over the summer raising funds for the project with various events such as a quiz evening, a fashion show, a hog roast, coffee morning and open garden etc.
The group is also grateful to the Townswomen's Guild who donated a substantial amount, raised at a concert, to have their name inscribed on the clock tower base. The next fund raising event will be on Tuesday November 13 when Hilary Binding, local historian, author and Free Press columnist, will be at the United Reformed Church Hall, in Bancks Street, Minehead, giving a talk entitled 'From Royal Forest to Jubilee Clock Tower'. It will start at 7.30pm and will cost £3.50 per head.
