SIR — I read with interest (Free Press December 28) that WS Atkins had more than 7,500 tonnes of salt stockpiled to keep Somerset moving over Christmas and the New Year.

What a pity the residents at the top of Staunton Road in Alcombe cannot take advantage of this.

As it isn't practical to send a gritter up Staunton Road, I suggested some five years ago to Cllr Colin Hill that it might be a good idea if WS Atkins put a salt box at the entrance to the garages so that people could spread what they wanted to keep them mobile.

Imagine my surprise when a salt box appeared, not by the garages but beside the sub-station some 300 yards away.

Perhaps it may help someone get up Chestnut Way, but to the people at the top of Staunton road, it's pretty useless to say the least.

Please Cllr Hill, please WS Atkins, will you bring your car to the top of the hill whilst you can get up and you will see for yourself the situation we are in when bad weather arrives.

Tom Welsh,

Staunton Road,

Alcombe.
