TRIBUTES will be paid to a World War Two hero during Remembrance Sunday (November 9) services in West Somerset.
A service will start at 10.45 am in St Petrock’s Church, Timberscombe, following which the congregation will process to the churchyard where the ashes of Major John Timothy are interred, close to the parish flagpole, as well as to the Commonwealth War Grave.
Major Timothy had the rare distinction of being awarded three Military Crosses.
His life and service has been recorded by Harvey Grenville and more information about him is being made available over the weekend in the village’s Lion Inn.
Mr Grenville has also researched the life and times of the Timberscombe villagers who served in the First World War and has a pamphlet available in the church.
A church spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are for all those who have lost their lives in service to our country.
“We urge all those who have service medals awarded to them to wear them, and all those who have service medals won by family members to be worn, but, as is customary, on their left side.”
Watchet’s Remembrance Sunday parade will start at 2.45 pm for a service in the Methodist Church at 3 pm followed by the laying of wreaths at the Harbour Road war memorial
On Armistice Day, November 11, a service of remembrance with a two-minute silence will be held at Watchet War Memorial at 11 am.
The Watchet branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding its annual meeting on November 19 at 7.30 pm in the RBL Club, in Mill Lane, when all members will be welcome to attend.

A Remembrance Sunday service in All Saints’ Church, Wootton Courtenay, will start at 10.45 am with all parishioners invited to attend.
During the service, villagers will remember the fallen of Wootton Courtenay from the First and Second World Wars, and also remember all those who have given their lives in war and conflict throughout the generations.
A family service will be held in Dulverton’s All Saints Church on Remembrance Sunday, from 9.30 am to 10.30 am.
Williton RBL branch will be holding a service in St Peter’s Church at 10.45 am on Remembrance Sunday, and then on Armistice Day at 10.45 am around the war memorial in the recreation ground.
A spokesperson said: “All residents are welcome to attend either or both services to continue to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“There will be an opportunity to meet friends after the services.”
A Remembrance Sunday service in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Stogumber, will be held at 10.55, and on Armistice Day an Act of Remembrance will take place with village primary schoolchildren joining in around the cross in the churchyard at 10.55 am.
First Bus is offering free travel for serving Armed Forces personnel, cadets, and veterans to attend events commemorating Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
All current and former members of the military and cadets need to do is show the driver their Armed Forces ID or wear their medals or uniform.
If safe to do so, bus drivers will be allowed to pull over at 11 am on both days to observe the two minutes of silence.
A spokesperson said: “We have many colleagues who have served in the military or have friends and family connections so this is always a poignant time of the year.
“We hope free travel on our services will make it as easy as possible for as many veterans, serving personnel, and cadets to attend Remembrance services and events.
“The patience of customers in helping our drivers to pay their respects is much appreciated.”
