Porlock Pals, the community transport scheme that serves the village, said they could not cope with more than they are already doing and would not want to be thought of as an alternative to buses.

“If there was a significant increase we would be in trouble. We would not realistically be able to replace a bus service – it would kill the system if demand goes up and up, we wouldn’t have the resources,” said Frank O’Neill, one of the scheme’s organisers.

He said there was a small pool of ten drivers, but of those only three were able to be regularly available, and as it was the scheme sometimes struggled to meet demand.
