FIVE gardens in one village will be open to the public on Sunday as part of a national charity scheme.

On July 3, five gardens in Stogumber will open under the National Gardens Scheme.

The gardens include three surprisingly large gardens in the village centre, and two very large gardens on the outskirts, with many rare and unusual plants. Features include a courtyard, ponds, bog gardens, rockery, vegetable and fruit gardens, plus magnificent views.

Homemade teas will be available in St Mary’s Church. There is free parking - just follow the signs from the A358 or B3224. Opening times are 2pm - 6pm ; admission £7, with children under 14 free. There is disabled access to all gardens. Dogs on leads are allowed.

• The garden at Elworthy Cottage (pictured), between Wiveliscombe and Watchet, is also open for the National Gardens Scheme on Tuesday July 5, 11am - 4pm. The large collection of hardy geraniums is in full flower along with many other interesting perennials, trees and shrubs.

There is an abundance of wildlife in the garden with lots of birdsong. The small meadow areas are looking colourful; there are lots of butterfles on the wild flowers and grasses.

There will be tea and coffee in aid of the Children’s Hospice South West. Admission £4.50, children free. Dogs welcome on short leads.
