WEST Somerset people are being urged to "turn out in force" to help shape a detailed masterplan for the development of a key Minehead site. Somerset County Council, which owns the 4.3- acres of land near the railway station destined to deliver a multi-million pound investment for the town and provide a base for desperately needed youth facilities, is staging a public meeting on Monday (March 6). The authority has already unveiled proposals to split the site into four to provide business workspace, a turntable for the West Somerset Railway, tourism and community space and youth facilities. Now it wants to give local communities the chance to find out about the constraints and opportunities for the development and to have some input into the masterplan, which it expects to be completed by the summer. Last month the council revealed it hoped the development would provide 8,000 square feet of workspace for small businesses at a cost of £800,000, a possible £600,000 building for craft and local food production, retailing and exhibition activities, the railway turntable and a possible transport interchange. In addition, the authority's vision of regenerating the area includes a firm commitment to give the group spearheading the Minehead EYE project - a campaign for a multi-facility centre and skatepark to serve young people across the district - the site it needs to attract major funding and turn its dream into a reality. The council, in partnership with the South West Regional Development Agency and the West Somerset Railway, is due to submit a bid for European cash in May to help fund the economic development aspects of the scheme. It is also beginning detailed negotiations with Minehead EYE leaders and the WSR to work up specific plans. Cllr Ian Galloway, who represents Minehead on the authority, said: "The county council and our partners are absolutely determined that local residents will shape the development of the site. "We have made sure during all stages of our journey that local people have had a real input into the proposed development and I hope that locals will turn out in force on Monday so that they can have a say in how their town will look in the future." The four priorities for the site were identified by the public at a previous meeting involving residents last December, which was attended by more than 60 people. Cllr Paul Buchanan, the council's economic development portfolio holder, said people had made very clear the themes they wanted the development to focus on. And he said the council was determined that with its partners it would delivery a legacy of which Minehead could be truly proud. The meeting at the Queen's Hall runs from 3pm to 7pm and anyone interested in attending should contact economic development officer Rani Budd on 01823 355336.
