WEST Somerset residents are being invited to join in national commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
Friday May 8 will mark 70 years since World War Two ended and peace was declared.
Somerset County Council has published practical online guidance to help communities and individuals planning to hold their own commemorative events – from lighting a bonfire to throwing a street party.
A council spokesman said: "We are encouraging Somerset residents to join people all over the UK to be part of a fantastic nationwide chain of remembrance.

Anyone planning to construct a bonfire beacon should contact the emergency services beforehand, while anything involving a road closure will need permission from the local authority.
"Chances are, people won't need planning permission for a bonfire beacon, but if they are intending to construct one within, on a building or within the curtilage of a building, they should check with their district or borough council's planning department.
"They also need to make sure they have the correct licensing for public entertainment or selling alcohol from their district or borough council.
"Appropriate insurance, and arranging litter disposal after the event, is also essential," the county council spokesman said.
Information for those organising events is available to download from the authority's website at somersetnewsroom.com/vedayinfo/.
