WEST Somerset MP Rachel Gilmour has met management of Butlin’s holiday resort in Minehead, four months after partially blaming the company for the district’s social mobility issues.
Mrs Gilmour told a public meeting in January how she believed local youngsters looked for easy, albeit low-paid, work with the company rather than trying to improve their education to achieve higher-paid employment later in life.
Now, Mrs Gilmour has met resort director Craig Goodwin to discuss the role of Butlin’s in Minehead and the wider West Somerset community.
Mr Goodwin told her Butlin’s was committed to making several of its facilities more open and accessible to local West Somerset people, and would fund the installation of new ‘Picture Exchange Communication System’ boards for non-verbal children.
He said the company was looking at making its SkyPark accessible play park more freely available for parents and families of children with disabilities.
Butlin’s was already working with the local Rotary club and its young carers support network, and wanted to see SkyPark used by other similar groups and organisations.
There was also scope for swimming pool facilities to be used by more clubs and organisations, while people could buy a £140 season pass, or £90 for children, to use the pool.
Mr Goodwin said Butlin’s was discussing concerns with First Bus about the capacity of the No 28 service to Taunton.
Mrs Gilmour said she was also following up with First Bus and was calling a ‘transport round table’ to discuss wider issues relating to public transport in the constituency.
She said: “After my meeting with the team at Butlin’s, I am incredibly grateful they have committed to making their facilities more accessible for West Somerset’s residents.
“We had a productive meeting, and I am looking forward to continuing to have a positive working relationship with their team.”
