WEST Somerset and Exmoor businesses have scooped some top places in the prestigious annual South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

Salad Days, a beach hut at Dunster Beach, won gold for dog friendly business of the year and silver for self-catering business of the year.

Lavender Hill Holidays, which has properties near Bicknoller and in Halse, won bronze for self-catering holiday provider of the year.

The Luttrell Arms Hotel in Dunster won bronze for tourism pub of the year - which category the Swan at Bampton won th gold award.

The awards, run annually by Visit England, with judging carried out locally by industry experts, were presented at a ceremony at the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay.

It was the biggest annual regional gathering of South West tourism businesses, with 123 different awards presented, and a record 647 entries from businesses as far apart as the Isles of Scilly to Wiltshire and Dorset, Devon to Bristol, Bath and Gloucestershire.

The awards follow on from the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Awards in October, and Salad Days will now find out if it is to represent Somerset at the national Visit England Awards to be held in Bath later this year.
