PUPILS at St Peter's First School in Williton will get at least one extra day off after frozen water pipes burst and flooded three classrooms at the village school.

Children were due to be back at their desks on Tuesday but Quantock Federation head Ian Bradbury said the school would be closed until Wednesday at the earliest.

He said it was too soon to say how much damage had been caused. Some items had been salvaged but there was no heating or electricity.

He said staff would do their best to contact as many parents as possible once a decision had been taken on when the school would re-open.

Information would also be posted outside the school and staff would be on hand to man the reception desk and telephones throughout Tuesday afternoon.

He said the burst pipes had affected the years one, three and four classrooms and yesterday (Thursday) experts were still assessing the extent of the damage.
