SIR — Allan Dyer (Your Letters June 24) makes some excellent points regarding the West Somerset District Council offices. It was on a late evening on June 30, 2003 that the full council met in Danesfield School, Williton, to discuss the future location of the offices.  I proposed that we should not locate our new all- encompassing offices at Minehead and that for a fraction of the price we could accommodate all of our administrative activities in a new build in Williton. Twelve other councillors supported me in the vote but we lost by a ratio of 2:1. There is no denying that our staff would benefit from having a high quality office environment. Morale would be boosted and consequently our level of efficiency should rise. The costs of accommodation would fall dramatically, leaving more revenue to be spent on front line services. The intention of the council has always been to centralise our offices and to provide satellite offices providing easy access to the public at strategic locations. The vision was to provide those in Dulverton, Minehead and/or Williton, depending on the final decision as to where the main office would be situated.  All the land that could possibly be used in Minehead for our new office block is far more valuable in development terms than a similar site in Williton.  It therefore makes sense (not to be mixed with politics apparently) to build on a cheaper site and collect more from selling or leasing land in Minehead that would generate more income for the council to re-invest in the infrastructure of the district as a whole. Next week, councillors will have an opportunity at a seminar to discuss four options of sites for the new offices. As I understand it at the moment, that will be three Minehead sites and one Williton site.  Bearing in mind the economic argument, members should be in no doubt which option they should select, that would then be put to the public for their views. The time is fast approaching when there is likely to be some real consultation with the public and I hope our dedicated staff will also have the opportunity to have an  input into the final resolution. Cllr Keith Ross, Member for Dulverton, West Somerset District Council.
