A SOMERSET youngster who has been treated for cancer has had her courage recognised with a special award from the charity Cancer Research UK.

Four-year-old Olivia Jeffrey, from Nether Stowey, has been presented with a special silver star-shaped trophy for the bravery she has shown during her cancer treatment.

Olivia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia - cancer of the white blood cells - in October 2010 and went through an intense course of chemotherapy.

Cancer Research UK's Little Star Awards acknowledge the unique challenges faced by youngsters who encounter cancer and raise vital funds for research into the disease.

Her brother Harry and sister Evelyn were also honoured with Little Star certificates in recognition of their bravery and support for Olivia.

The children were nominated by mum Deborah: "Olivia is just coming to the end of her treatment and we are so proud of her courage throughout. It is lovely to have her courage honoured."

As well as the trophy, Olivia also received a £50 TK Maxx gift card and a certificate signed by celebrities including pop group JLS, Olympic medal winner Mo Farah, singer Leona Lewis and footballer Steven Gerrard.

Her family has also raised several thousands of pounds towards a specialist children's toy room at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

The room would be kept sterile and enable young cancer sufferers like Olivia to have access to toys when they are admitted to hospital for treatment.

Karen Davis, Cancer Research UK's South West spokesman, said: "Olivia is a true 'Little Star' who richly deserves this accolade.

"We hope to acknowledge the bravery of many more children like Olivia across the region and are encouraging family and friends to get nominating now."

The Little Star Awards are open to all under 18s who have cancer or who have been treated for the disease in the last five years.
