BROTHERS Ben and Oliver Johnson – aged six and three – were so concerned about the Australian bush fires that they decided to do something to help and ended up raising £644.

The boys, who live in Minehead, set off on a two-mile uphill hike from Dunkery Gate to Dunkery Beacon and invited their friends to join them to raise funds for two charities – WIRES and the Salvation Army Australia Disaster Appeal.

WIRES specialises in helping the wildlife and The Salvation Army Australia Disaster Appeal ensures all of the first responders, volunteers and victims receive meals and basic supplies.

Three-year-old Oliver and big brother Ben asked for sponsorship to do it and their friends brought donations with them on the day.

They chose Sunday January 26 as it was Australia Day, but their mum Kirsty said: “It was also possibly the worst day to do the walk!

“It rained very hard, it was extremely cold and when we reached the Beacon, the wind was so strong the children struggled to stay upright!

“But all of the children were very valiant despite the conditions and they all made it to the top, where Ben presented them with a medal each and we captured a quick photo and then rapidly hiked back down the hill for another mile. The brave children were then rewarded with a well deserved cake.”

Ben and Oliver’s efforts were also supported by a cake sale at Beaver Ford and Beaver Garage and car sales on Friday January 24.

Friends baked and bought cakes and people left donations: “We also had a wonderful donation from Lovely Boutique, Minehead, of two Irregular Choice designer bags which we raffled off,” said Lisa.

The total amount, £643.98, will be split between the two charities on behalf of Ben and Oliver. The boys are very grateful to everyone who has supported them by donations, sponsorship and by accompanying them on their tough walk.
