PEOPLE taking part in a Boxercise event in Minehead, as well as others donating online, have raised £900 towards a £1,000 target to support Ovarian Cancer Action.

The three-hour marathon Box 2 Beat Cancer event last Saturday was organised by fitness instructor Luisa Skinner and held in the new fitness suite at The Beach Hotel, Minehead.

“It was a challenging but really fun morning, with lots of laughter,” said Luisa. “We set ourselves a team target of £1,000 and are thrilled with how many local people have donated - we are almost to our target.”

This was the first time Luisa, who works at the gym which is funded by charity Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, brought the event to Minehead after training with Boxercise last year.

“I knew this could be a great event for Minehead,” she said.

“My aim is always to get the people of West Somerset moving, and as a proud Ambassador for the Sport England ‘This Girl Can’ campaign I love to focus on helping women in particular gain confidence to work out and keep active.”

Boxercise and the Ovarian Cancer Action charity get together across the country each March, with events that both publicise the fun of being active while raising funds and awareness about ovarian cancer.

Joining the Minehead group on Saturday was Rob Dawson, who travelled from Frome to take part, and he has raised £1,316 for his own 12 Cancer Challenges in support of Ovarian Cancer Action, as his mother is currently battling the disease.

“It was made so much more poignant by Rob joining us for the day, having the closest of connections to this disease. I’m so glad we could help him in his personal journey and fundraising too,” said Luisa.
