MORE than £7,000 has been raised to repair a boggy path on Exmoor as a result of the ‘Mend our Mountains’ crowdfunding campaign.
It was set up by the British Mountaineering Council to raise money for urgent path repair projects.
The ‘Mend Exmoor’ project was to repair a remote and ancient trading route through the heart of Exmoor in the Long Chains Combe.
The path, part of the Two Moors Way, was put forward by Exmoor National Park Authority as it has become a boggy quagmire and difficult to use.
National park ranger Richard Eales said: “It’s great to be able to get on with the work now that we can pay to get the local stone airlifted to this remote site.”
He added that it was a particularly fitting choice as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Two Moors Way.
Sue Applegate, rights of way officer at the park authority, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who donated to our project which will improve access in this beautiful part of Exmoor.
“Having set ourselves a rather ambitious target for the funding, we were delighted to have raised so much.”
She said donations also came from Minehead-based XMAN Events and the South West business Encounter Walking Holidays.
