THE four developers shortlisted to transform Watchet's derelict East Quay should be embarking on a 'walkabout' of the town within the next month. Town councillors were told at a meeting on Monday that consultants Donaldsons had now prepared a final brief for the site and the potential bidders would be hoping to get a feel for the challenge ahead on a tour of the area. The developers - Allied Land Plc, Bloc Kilmartin, Trevor Osborne Property Group Ltd and Urban Splash - will be accompanied by members of a working group of members and officers from West Somerset District Council, which owns the East Quay. The companies have been selected based on their financial standing, previous track record, the composition and experience of the design team and their initial design ideas. District Cllr Tony Knight, who with fellow Watchet representatives Cllrs David Banks and Jenny Hill, will be on the walkabout, said it would definitely take place before July 11. But he also revealed that ideas were in the pipeline to improve the adjoining Esplanade. Cllr Knight said he and Cllrs Banks and Hill were due to have a meeting with district council officers on June 27 to discuss a series of suggestions for enhancing the area. He said the ideas had been drawn up by the council and would be put before the public in time. "Some of them are quite exciting and I hope some of the things put forward will benefit the youth of the town, as well as other people."
