SIR — Re your front page report on Hinkley Point C last week, EdF is not giving money to hamlet residents closest to the site so that they may double-glaze, insulate and screen-plant themselves against the impact of the works, nor is it offering compensation if they need to move.

So far, EdF's suggestion is a highly qualified and limited offer to consider implementing a scheme in which they would decide and control the criteria for eligibility and the way in which such measures are applied.

Since in its planning application EdF is pleased to consider that almost all impacts on these hamlets will be minor, negligible, insignificant and temporary, your readers need not imagine that the local residents will experience a sudden and undeserved improvement in their standard of living at no cost to themselves.

Beware of Greeks, not to say the French, bearing gifts.
