CHILDREN at the Watchet school where Bethany Lowe was a pupil sang her favourite hymn this week in memory of the youngster described as a star pupil. And Christine Pirt, the principal of Buckland School, which Bethany attended for two-and-a-half years before moving to France last autumn, admitted she broke down and cried during the singing of Daisies Are Our Silver, a 20th century hymn loved by the ten-year-old. "Bethany was an exceptional pupil," said Mrs Pirt. "My husband told the children about her death during assembly on Monday but it hit me particularly hard a couple of days later. "It was just such terrible news, so tragic." Mrs Pirt said Bethany, a good all rounder and budding pianist who, like her mother, loved horse riding, had blossomed during her time at the school. "She threw herself into everything she did with great enthusiasm and she loved her school work "She was our May princess and a cowboy in one of our productions. She was involved in and was good at so many things. "Her death is such a huge loss." Mrs Pirt had been teaching Bethany French in preparation for her move abroad and to help her slip more easily into her new school life. "She wrote to me from France just before Christmas and had obviously settled in well," said Mrs Pirt. "I wrote back and I know that some of her old schoolfriends had also kept in touch with her. "She was a star pupil. The school's thoughts are especially with her father, who we knew quite well and who played a full part in her education and upbringing. "Words cannot adequately express what we are feeling." In a statement describing his family's deep sadness, Gary Lowe, who lives in Pawlett, near Bridgwater, said: "Bethany was a sociable, gregarious, intelligent little girl with a zest for life. "Her lasting sense of humour will never be forgotten. "She gave so much love and was loved so much by her daddy and family. "We cannot believe her life has been cut so short. She will be missed so very much - more than words can say." Bethany, her mother Julie-Ann and stepfather Keith Bridges had been living in Bicknoller before their move to France but had previously lived at Tower Hill, Williton, where Bethany was a pupil at the village's St Peter's First School for a short time. The family had moved from Bridgwater some time after Mr Bridges was appointed West Somerset sector inspector and Bethany had previously attended Wembdon St George's Church of England Primary School, where ten-year-old Gabriella Dyer, who also died in the crash, was a pupil. Bethany's mother, described as outgoing and bubbly by friends, was a traffic warden with the Avon and Somerset force, serving in Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and latterly Minehead.
