SIR — I am writing as a member of the public, not as a parish councillor, concerning David Gliddon's letter about Lloyds Bank in Williton (Free Press, June 13). I have checked with the planning case officer who confirms that the planning application for the supermarket and units is for four kiosks and a café building. If the building for Lloyds to relocate to is the extension to the Country Store in Bank Street, this would be away from the village centre in Fore Street and would not offer Lloyds the visibility they currently have. Although a supermarket would have customers that would also go to Lloyds, there would also be one less reason for them to go into the village centre. This would adversely affect the vitality and viability of Williton village centre. Lloyds have recently spent a lot of money refurbishing their branch and do not see a business case for them to relocate, which costs a lot of money and is disruptive to customers. Lloyds already has a prime site in Fore Street and Williton is a busy and prosperous retail centre, but this would be in danger should planning permission be granted for a supermarket.
