EVERYONE'S tail was wagging last Tuesday evening when dogs with responsible owners were presented with certificates in Porlock Village Hall.

They have been taking part in the Kennel Club's Good Citizen Dog Scheme, a three-part programme of bronze, silver and gold awards.

The scheme provides participants with the practical knowledge and skills needed to become 'good citizens' and responsible dog owners.

In West Somerset, the training has been given by Julie Dare, of The Dog Partnership, who uses a combination of clicks and rewards to keep dogs alert, happy and aware of who's boss.

"Everyone who has a dog could benefit from this," said West Somerset dog warden Angela Simpson.

"The courses teach owners how to look after their dogs' welfare and to be aware of the social responsibilities of owning a dog.

"Since the courses started, I've not had to pick up any of the trained dogs off the street, so we must be on the right track."

Bronze and silver certificates were presented by Angela and district council chairman Viv Brewer to Theo Sax, Jane Tatay, Claire Vickery, Clare Buckland, Dave Buckland, John Boshier, Ann Kosk and Libby Portch.

Details of the courses are available from Angela at West Somerset District Council's environment and consumer services unit on 01984 635305.
