A FARM near Wiveliscombe has been presented with a plaque made by Wells Cathedral stonemasons at the Bishop's Palace as one of the winners of a South West building award. Sir Harry and Lady Diana Farrington's renovated farm complex at Higher Ford was one of five projects to receive recognition from the South West Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). They were presented with the conservation award by Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Lady Gass. Higher Ford and the other category winners now go on to compete with regional bests in England and Wales, Scotland and RICS International. The Grade Two listed range of farm buildings at Higher Ford, just outside Wiveliscombe, became obsolete following the BSE epidemic and general declining fortunes in agriculture. They were renovated using mostly local labour and traditional materials and techniques, and now serve as six office suites. Due to the high standard, Higher Ford Farm shared the conservation award with Robin Hood's Hut, in Halswell Park, Goathurst. There were three other award categories - sustainability, community benefit and regeneration. These along with Higher Ford and Robin's Hut will now compete against regional winners from RICS England and Wales, Scotland and International. The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on October 7 at London's Banqueting House. Among those at the regional ceremony were RICS South West chairman Grant Watson, president-elect Steve Williams and chairman of awards panel David Marsh among those present. RICS South West regional director Matthew McKaig said: "The inaugural regional awards have proved to be very successful. We received a number of high quality entries and the competition was very fierce, we wish the winners every success in the national stage of the competition."
