MINEHEAD’S specialist training college Aurora Foxes’ principal Mark Costello has been helping to break down barriers for employers who hire people with learning disabilities.

Mr. Costello attended the event with independent living and employability skills tutor Chris Jackson at the prestigious Hilton London Metropole Hotel.

They appeared at the Breaking Barriers event, a free educational workshop for businesses, after being invited to speak of their successes.

A survey conducted by Hilton showed that nine in 10 people with learning disabilities have experienced difficulties obtaining jobs and 80 per cent of people with a learning disability felt afraid of judgement at the interview stage.

Mr. Costello explored how decision-makers can create a more inclusive application process, with practical advice on how to support those with a learning disability and help them succeed.

At the event, Aurora Foxes showed a video of the positive impacts of its work, showcasing its students working at a community kitchen in Williton.

Aurora Foxes and Hilton have been in partnership since 2015 and since, Hilton have hosted 35 students. They currently employ 11 graduates from Aurora Foxes.

Aurora Foxes has a wide range of advice for employers who hire and work with people with learning difficulties.

It advises employers to give clear and simple instructions to employees with learning disabilities and break down tasks into smaller chunks to avoid confusion.

Aurora Foxes also asked employers to consider using different application and interview formats as well as changing work tools to a more visual-friendly format to help those who struggle with the written word.

Mr. Costello said: “It is so important to have an inclusive application and interview process so that you do not disadvantage people and miss out on creating a better workplace.”

Aurora Foxes also advocate for a buddy system for new recruits, to help learn the job requirements and integrate with colleagues with more ease.

Hilton vice-president of operations Julie Baker said: “Our unwavering commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity within our workforce is exemplified by our long-term partnership with Aurora Foxes.

“Every day, we witness the tangible results of employing individuals with learning disabilities at Hilton, where their unique talents and skills are truly valued.

"We hope sharing our learning and successes will inspire others to do the same.”
