SIR — I would like to congratulate Cllr Nethercott on his letter (Free Press June 28).

At last we have a councillor who talks sense and understands that you can only spend up to your available income.

So many of our councillors, who are supposed to do their best for the people who elected them, consistently wander off into the realms of fantasy and embrace schemes way beyond the limited means at their disposal and which are of no possible benefit to the community.

During the past few years many schemes have been propounded which, if scrutinised, would clearly show that any resultant profitability would find its way directly into the coffers of the holiday camp.

Many of us, like Cllr Nethercott, are not beguiled by this latest idea of a 7,000 seater arena, rather the contrary, when one considers the present infrastructure. Yet another fruitless enterprise.

It appears, and this confirms our own observations, that communications between the so-called cabinet at West Somerset District Council and our councillors is non-existent, the latter having to rely solely on press releases to inform them what has already been decided behind closed doors.

Is it, therefore, surprising that turn out at local elections in this area is often below 20 per cent, when one considers what little impact councillors opinions have on the cabinet, ie the inner sanctum.
