A SPECIALLY created artwork by a Watchet artist is now signposting people to the town’s community centre.

Watchet Town Council commissioned local artist and illustrator Jill Newton to create the sign, continuing a theme of “a lively community offering many activities and events” which she painted as a mural in the centre in 2016.

Jill held workshops with children at Knights Templar School before designing the mural to gauge ideas - and it led to the distinctive artwork on display in the town.

The community centre management committee works to ensure the centre is available for everyone in the community, and has organised an active summer programme there over the school holidays.

Sessions have been booked to capacity for the centre’s multi-sports days every Wednesday, and Nerf Wars every Thursday morning, which run to the end of the school holidays. The sessions are provided at a low cost to Watchet families.

During term time, the centre is fully booked and offers a variety of activities for all ages, with the town council continuing to fund two youth club sessions a week, provided by Minehead Eye.

Cllr Sally de Renzy-Martin, chairman of the community centre management committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see the centre being used to its full potential and it remains a great asset to the town.

“Since its refurbishment, it offers a good community space and a low rental to make it affordable for users.

“It remains a great asset to the town’.
