THE first artisan market at Minehead Harbour on Saturday faced some challenges with the windy conditions during the setting up of the marquees, but the weather cleared and the sun came out in time for the opening.

It was the first of six weekly markets which have been funded by the Minehead Coastal Communities Group to attract people to the area.

Visitors were able to stroll around the stalls on the quayside, which featured crafts such as handmade jewellery; original paintings by local artists, stained glass, wildlife photography and handmade boats.

There was face painting for children, while homemade fare and refreshments were on offer.

Visitors can make a day of it by walking the Minehead Maritime Mile Heritage Trail, which starts at the eastern end of the promenade near Butlin’s and follows a marked route to the harbour.

People can test their knowledge and observation skills by tackling a quiz on the trail app called ‘Minehead Bay’, which can be downloaded for Android and iOS devices.

A prize is on offer by presenting a completed quiz to the Minehead Visitor Centre next to the West Somerset Railway station.

The app also contains augmented reality features, videos, souvenir selfies and more.

The markets run on Saturdays until September 1 from 10am to 3pm.

Pitches can still be booked – contact Jill Homewood for details at [email protected] or on 07790338831.
