NEWLY-born Stanley Spence will have a lasting memento of how much his arrival meant to his family - thanks to his two grannies.

Stanley, a first child for Molly and Paul Spence of Minehead, has already made a name for himself by coming into the world on the same day as the newest Royal baby, Prince George.

But months before Stanley was born, Paul and Molly's mums, Liz Spence and Karen Maddison decided to create a very special family heirloom.

They sent material squares to family and friends across the world and asked them to sew, stitch or stick on anything that said something about themselves.

Once returned to West Somerset, the grannies set to work to turn the squares into a special quilt for Stanley - and Paul's father, also called Paul, said the finished work was beautiful.

"There are 44 squares in all and relatives and friends from a huge area - from Australia to Scotland - have taken the time to make their mark," he said.

The quilt was handed over to Molly and Paul this week and instead of being used as a bedcover is likely to end up as a wall hanging.

"They absolutely loved it - it made Molly cry," said Paul senior.

"Liz and Karen decided to do it when Molly was pregnant but managed to keep it a secret.

"I'm sure it will be around for a long time to come."
