A RUSTIC wooden canopy built over a weekend by volunteers on derelict ground in Watchet has been put forward for an architectural award.

Over 50 people took part in a three-day design-and-build workshop last September.

It was the first stage of a grand plan to return overgrown scrubland at Splash Point overlooking Watchet Harbour, to its previous use as a Victorian pleasure ground.

Now there are plans to use the space for a series of community events this summer, including theatre performances, music and dance, as soon as funding can be put in place.

The Onion Collective masterminded the project and acquired the land at a peppercorn rent from the owner, Watchet businessman John Richards.

It has been entered for the Architects’ Journal small projects award.
