Forty members, old and new, of the West Somerset Company of Archers (WSCOA) celebrated the opportunity to return to their annual barbecue and fun shoot at the Wootton Courtenay sports ground on Sunday (August 22).

Following the most recent lockdown, archery started again earlier this year. During the gradual easing, members have been following Government and Archery GB guidelines, but finally welcomed the chance to relax and enjoy an old favourite in the social calendar.

Despite the difficulties posed by Covid-19, WSCOA has had enquiries from sufficient would- be archers to run two training courses in recent months in addition to a course last year. Members of all ages from ten upwards and a wide range of disabilities are welcome to approach the club.

Archery is an accessible sport and features in the Paralympics and Invictus Games. One club member is a former Invictus Games competitor, and a junior member shoots with the use of only one arm.

Club secretary Simon Booth said: “We welcome enquiries from anyone interested in trying their hand at archery. The club offers a beautiful location where members enjoy a fascinating and historic sport in fresh air, good company and a safe environment. On top of that we get wonderful days like today, when we can get together and just have fun.”

Within the Archery GB national framework there are opportunities for all affiliated clubs to participate in competitions, coaching and development. Friendly local competitions and social events form part of the annual calendar in normal circumstances.
