Yeovil Town Council has made a long-term financial commitment to play its part in the refurbishment of Yeovil Recreation Ground.
Facilities at the venue, commonly known as Mudford Rec, is in a poor state and the district council has promised to cough up half of the £1.8 million needed to see the tree-year refurbishment programme through.
The town council had already pledged £30,000 to be spent on the athletics track, and last week its policy, resources and finance committee decided to commit an extra £25,000 for work to be carried out during 2002-03 and a further £25,000 for the following financial year.
The district council recently approved the appointment of a facilities officer on a year's contract to manage and promote the facility, and the ambition is to make this post permanent.
Money has also been sought from other organisations, including the Lottery Sports Fund and the Football Foundation.
Lynda Bagley, the district council's senior sport and recreation officer, attended the committee meeting to give an update. She displayed images of how the changing rooms are going to look, and reported there had been no objections received during the public consultation process for these.
Committee members pointed out that alternative accommodation had to be found for a number of organisations using the current facilities since the plans for the new facility didn't seem to cater for them.
Mrs Bagley agreed to look into this as a matter of urgency and report back to the next meeting of Yeovil Sports Strategy Steering Group.
