YOUNG Minehead fishermen Keelan Owen and Charlie Tudball have returned home after helping England win the youth section of the Home International Shore Angling Competition held in Montrose last weekend. Keelan, 18, and Charlie, 19, are members of the West Coast and Watchet Sea Angling Club and have been fishing for a number of years. Thy travelled to the east coast of Scotland earlier in the week and spent last Wednesday and Thursday getting the feel of fishing on a different beach. The competition, involving England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, took place on Friday and Saturday and on each day the West Somerset pair were fishing for four hours. Fishing against a representative from each of the countries, Keelan was second in his zone and Charlie third in his at the end of the first day, and both ended in second place after the second day. The result was measured by the length of fish caught and England won with 31 points, just one ahead of second-placed Wales. "It was a great experience to be part of the England team that won the gold medal at the competition," said Charlie. "The fishing wasn't quite as good as I had hoped, but the youth team were the winners, which was just fantastic. "There was a lot of pressure on us while we were fishing but it was just brilliant to be there and take part in the competition. "We knew that it was going to be close. In fact we thought that Wales had won until they announced that it was England." England's ladies' team, who won a bronze medal, included Rachael Jarman from Bicknoller, who has been a great help to the Minehead youngsters and is pictured with Charlie (left) and Keelan holding their team's trophy. The pair would thanked Minehead Cricket Club, Somerset County Sports and the Old Ship Aground for their help and support. The next competition for the duo is in Christchurch in Dorset at the end of the month.
