SIR — With reference to Cllr Doug Webber's letter regarding the position of the proposed war memorial in Watchet (Free Press, June 25), he is wrong.
Putting the memorial tucked beside the library is not a good idea at all.
I think, as many will agree, it should be on The Esplanade for everyone to see ie locals and visitors alike.
The advantages are numerous. There is ample room for meetings and congregations of people away from traffic. There is ample parking on Harbour Road. The level surface is ideal for scooters and those of poor mobility. The area is near to all amenities: cafés, pubs, restaurants etc.

Explain to me why a statue of an old sailor and a fictitious ancient mariner should have a prominent position on The Esplanade, but you want to hide the memorial to the people that gave their lives for their country.
This is not aimed just at Cllr Webber but everyone who has been involved in the positioning of the proposed memorial.
