SIR — I felt compelled to write after reading the report in which Cllr Gower from Williton in particular called the raising of the flag for Armed Services Day a shambles (Free Press, July 8).
I happened to be in Williton and, seeing a large gathering near the council offices, recalled reading in the Free Press that an event was being staged, so thought I should remain for it.
The local vicar offered prayer, followed by a most dignified and pleasingly poignant tribute from the chairman of the council.
Without any hesitation, members of the Royal British Legion came forward, the standards were lowered and formalities followed.
The chairman then raised the Armed Forces flag and I witnessed a tear as he paid tribute to a family friend who had not returned from Afghanistan. There was then a vote of gratitude expressed by a uniformed member from Norton Manor Camp and the ceremony ended with a further prayer after a heart warming occasion.
Perhaps a microphone would have helped for the veterans who spoke, although I heard them and members of the public could have moved further along the pavement for a closer view.
To say that there were only 30 people present was ludicrous as I counted over 60 veterans and RBL members along one side alone, and where I stood there must have been well in excess of 30!
It was lovely to witness the elderly veterans waiting to shake hands with the chairman for his words and to speak to the uniformed representatives. You could see the pride in their eyes and gratitude for being remembered.
This wasn't November and the national two minutes' silence, so I would not expect shops and roads to be closed.
However, I understand it was a local councillor who did shut shop, which is commendable.
The comments at Williton Parish Council upset me and I feel was an insult to all who took part and I know has caused distress to veterans who were present.
Although I have not lived in West Somerset long, this act of respect by those present was so profound and then spoilt.
Mrs L Blakely,
Alcombe.
