SIR — May I take the opportunity to congratulate and thank the gardeners and groundsmen of the local authority for once again working so hard to make Minehead look so beautiful.

The flower beds, hanging baskets and in particular Blenheim Gardens have all looked their best throughout the whole summer season.

Could I also give a special mention to the groundsmen responsible for keeping our public open spaces and verges so neat and tidy. I have visited other towns this year where local authorities have cut back on grass cutting and I feel it gives the impression of shabbiness and lack of pride in their town.

As stated in a previous letter, I am concerned that in the predicted cuts in next year's budget, the council will look upon parks and floral decoration as an easy option.

This I feel will have a massively negative effect on the town.

As someone who works in the tourist industry in Minehead, the comments I continually receive from our clients and visitors are how beautiful the gardens and floral displays are and how clean and tidy the town always looks.

I urge the local authority to consider this when making financial decisions in the next round of spending cuts, without visitors and holiday makers, Minehead will wither on the vine.

Derek Blay,

Old Farm Road,

Minehead.
