A REMIX of a 30-year-old number one hit pop song has been helping a West Somerset football team raise funds for a new minibus.

And the pop group East 17, who sang the 1994 Christmas No 1 ‘Stay Another Day’, have sent a ‘good luck’ message to players of Alcombe Rovers FC who produced a music video cover of the track for their fund-raising appeal.

Alcombe, who play home matches on the King George V Playing Field, in Minehead, are nearly half-way to their £5,000 target.

The club’s commercial manager, Brian Hall, said: “We have received a special ‘good luck’ message from none other than the iconic East 17, the legendary boy band behind some of the biggest hits of the ’90s.

“We might not be pop stars, but we have had a blast, and it is all for an amazing cause.

“Every donation gets us closer to our goal.

“We have gone all out this year to raise money for a community minibus, by recording our very first song.”

Mr Hall said Alcombe Rovers was like many grassroots clubs which faced financial challenges and relied on volunteers, players, and supporters.

Supporting the appeal was not just helping to buy a minibus, it was investing in the future of grassroots football and young people in the community.

The football club was founded in 1947 and apart from a year out in 2022 it has been a cornerstone of the local community for more than 75 years.

Mr Hall said Alcombe Rovers had proudly served generations of young players, giving them a place to learn, grow, and develop, both on and off the pitch.

He thanked Hive Recording Studio and Deep Focus Media for supporting the recording and making of the ‘Stay Another Day’ music video.
