BUSINESS leaders in Williton have launched a new forum aimed at revitalising the local economy.
The first meeting of what is hoped will become a dedicated chamber of commerce for the village attracted a total of 30 people.
Brian Tyner, who runs Williton post office with his wife, has been the driving force behind the initiative, which is aimed at developing a sense of unity and building up the area, including the tourist industry.
Mr Tyner chaired the meeting with the support of Ross and Rebecca James, who run Catwell House B and B.
Sandra Wilson, who chairs both the Somerset Chamber of Trade and the West Somerset Business Forum, spoke about the workings and benefits of becoming a chamber of commerce and also commended those attending for their enthusiasm.
And West Somerset Council's regeneration officer Corinne Matthews also spoke and offered her support, saying she was sure the group would be a great benefit to the area.
Further support came from John Richards, chairman of neighbouring Watchet's business group WACET, who offered to share how the town had benefited from businesses working together in a similar way.
A number of people have offered to be on a steering committee, while businessman Edward Martin, who runs the village's greengrocers and a separate computer business, has agreed to set up a website.
"There was a real sense of enthusiasm and an air of collective anticipation as the various ideas and talents became evident," said a spokesman.
"The clear benefits that were immediately obvious are being part of a valuable website, at very little cost, where each business can place their details; the development of a local business directory; the opportunity to be involved in issues of concern such as parking in the village, as well as the much talked about bypass to make Williton a 'walker friendly village' so that tourists are attracted, which will in turn boost the local economy."
Organisers are now appealing for more businesses in the village to join the forum.
Questionnaires - to collate relevant information about members - are available at the post office, or people can email [email protected]">[email protected] for more information.
The next meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday (May 5) at the White House, Williton.
