YOUNGSTERS with Wiveliscombe-based Gurt Wyrms Explorers have had an action-packed first three months since the group opened in September.

Gurt Wyrms Explorers is part of the scouting movement and is open to boys and girls aged 14 to 17 years.

Though a variety of activities and adventures the Explorers have been encouraged to ask the ‘bigger questions’, think on their feet, be part of a team, and always have a plan B up their sleeves.

All of which are key ‘skills for life’ which they can take forward to university, careers, and beyond.

As well as developing skills ranging from leadership and communication to teamwork, the youths have taken part in activities such as map reading, DIY projects, pioneering, and retro gaming nights.

Explorer Scout Adela said: “I like going to Explorers in Wiveliscombe because I do not usually talk to new people or do exciting outdoor things and Explorers takes me out of my comfort zone, lets me meet new people my age, and learn cool skills like that I have never really been good at before.”

Guided by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, in just a short time the Explorers have taken part in pioneering, developed teamwork and organisation skills, and have taken part in a medieval-themed camp which included jousting.

They have also been making a positive impact in their local community by partnering with a derelict church hall to help restore and turn it into a community centre for local people to use, developing many DIY skills along the way.

The unit has not only allowed the youngsters to continue their scouting journey but has also welcomed young people who were completely new to scouting and all the opportunities it can offer.

Scouts also provide adults with opportunities to learn new things.

Lead volunteer Clover said: “I started volunteering for scouts over 10 years ago, the laughs and adventures I have had in that time have been amazing.

“I have also learnt a lot and made some great friends.”

Assistant volunteer Matt said: “Volunteering at Explorers gives me the sense that I can provide adventures and opportunities to young people that I had the chance to enjoy myself when I was a participant.

“I take pride in inspiring the next generation of leaders.”

Gurt Wyrms Explorers has many more adventures in store for the New Year, including city trips, hikes, and summer camps, and an international camp might even be on the cards.
