TWO stranded kayakers were rescued from mud beyond the safety of the shore at Blue Anchor on Saturday afternoon (January 20).
Watchet coastguard team was called out when the pair were spotted by patrolling police special constables.
The kayakers had managed to wade 100 metres or so closer, but they were soon exhausted and remained a good distance from the shore.
Arriving on scene, the coastguards despatched two mud rescue technicians, Richard Nicholas and Simon Bale, with a rescue sledge and equipment out across the mud to the kayakers.
They were then able to attach rescue lines onto the kayaks and the remaining coastguards on shore used their winch to haul the kayakers and two coastguards back to safety.
Meanwhile, staff at the Driftwood Café, seeing the incident unfold, organised hot drinks for the two rescued males, neither of whom was hurt.
The kayakers were not fully prepared for the strong winds or the air and sea temperatures.
An ambulance was called and its crew checked the kayakers for any symptoms of hydro static squeeze or exposure, before they were allowed to make their way home.
