THE rescue of a dog swept away by the flooded River Avill at Dunster Beach on Saturday has brought a warning from Coastguards of the dangers of owners trying to save their pets.
On a day when 15 flood alerts were in place across West Somerset, the dog was carried away by the river and the owner went into the water to save it.
The Coastguard spokesman said: “Luckily, the dog and its owner managed to return to the shore unharmed. We would remind everyone not to enter the water, especially fast-flowing rivers, to attempt any self-rescue.
“Often the human rescuers can end up being a casualty while their pet escapes unhurt.
“Emotions can run high when a beloved pet is involved in an incident. However, having the strength and courage not to enter the water and instead dial 999 and ask for help will hopefully ensure that the pet has its family to return to.”
The spokesman added: "Please try to keep your pet dogs on leads on unguarded cliff edges and near fast-flowing rivers and swollen water-courses.”
