Enthusiastic sixth-formers were at the heart of a fundraising raffle for Minehead’s RNLI station.

West Somerset College joined forces with local businesses to create a raffle among staff and students, raising £342.30 towards a new RNLI building.

Sixth-form ambassadors organised the prize draw with lifeboat operations manager John Higgie turning out to pull the winning tickets.

Prizes included a family ticket to Dunster Castle, vouchers for the Regal Theatre and East Quay, among others.

Beth Sherburn, who helped make the raffle happen, said: “I am over the moon with the amount we have raised for the RNLI lifeboats. I was inspired by the television show Saving Lives at Sea and all the amazing things the local station does for the community.

“I hope this money will provide a kick-start to their appeal for funds for a new station. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and helped to put this event together.”

Beth, 17, and a team of sixth-form volunteers collected prizes and sold tickets with winners including students from each year group and even the school’s headteacher, Gregg Mockridge.
