A SPECIALIST rescue unit training in Watchet harbour had to carry out a dramatic real-life rescue when a woman crew member who admitted she had been drinking, fell from the stern of a moored yacht in Watchet marina on Sunday morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue’s specialist unit from Bridgwater was on the outer harbour slipway preparing to launch their powerful RIB rescue boat on a routine exercise when they were alerted by a member of the public that a woman had fallen into the marina.

A Watchet Coastguard spokesman said that the passer-by on The Esplanade had seen the woman floating face-down in the water.

“We were also on the scene very quickly and prepared for a swift water rescue but this was not needed as the fire and rescue unit recovered the casualty with their boat and administered first aid.

“She was unconscious and extremely cold. Water temperatures at this time of year are very low and anyone entering the water in these circumstances may only have ten to 15 minutes’ survival time.’

Praising the quick action of members of the public, he said: “This casualty was very lucky. Had this been in the middle of the night or early morning, we certainly would be dealing with a fatality.”

The spokesman said that the woman had admitted she had been drinking on board the yacht and added: “We would like to remind everyone that alcohol has contributed to over 1,500 deaths in the last 15 years and can severely reduce your ability to survive in the water.

“Let this be a timely reminder to wear life-jackets when on board a vessel, while at sea or moored up in dock.”

Rescuers searched the harbour and marina in case anyone else was in the water but, when the search proved negative, Minehead lifeboat and Williton fire and rescue teams, who were on their way to Watchet, were stood down.

The rescued woman was given first aid at the nearby Sea Scouts water activity centre before being taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, but was later allowed to go home.
