Three fire engines were called to a terraced house in Wheddon Cross in the early hours of yesterday morning, after a mattress and bedding on the first floor, caught fire.

People in the house escaped before the crew from Minehead and Porlock arrived at 3.50am at the house in Meadow Close and got to work to extinguish the fire.

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and one for minor burns to the hand.

The fire caused severe fire and smoke damage to the bedroom, and smoke damage to the first floor.

Crews used two breathing apparatus, an attack jet and a thermal imaging camera.

The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
