A MAN was taken to hospital by air ambulance after the Land Rover he was driving landed on its side at the top of Porlock Hill.

The road was closed in both directions after the crash at around 6pm last Friday.

Three fire engines, two from Minehead and one from Porlock, attended and used hydraulic cutting equipment to reach the man, who was trapped inside with his dogs.

His care was then handed over to the ambulance service, and he was taken to Porlock Recreation Ground.

Eye-witnesses Mervyn Mugford and Ivor Jones gave the Free Press an account of the incident.

“The Land Rover Discovery overturned, blocking the road in both directions and trapping the driver and his three dogs,” said Mr Mugford.

“Two air ambulances from Devon Air Ambulance and Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance attended at the same time, in the misty recreation ground,” said Mr Jones.

He said a medical team there prepared to put the casualty into an induced coma before he was transferred to hospital in Bristol by helicopter.

“Once more, this emergency further underlined the value of such a potentially life-saving facility in a rural area, where the nearest dedicated A&E Department is around 30 miles away,” he said.
