It is hoped that a number of measures, including the cutting of a hedge, will reduce accidents at a notorious stretch of South Somerset road.
Vagg Hill Crossroads, between Yeovil and Chilthorne Domer, has been the scene of a string of accidents. Highway officials have looked into the matter and are currently preparing proposals for a speed reduction to 40mph.
"Following a review of the speed limits, we intend to prepare proposals for a speed limit reduction in the area. It is our intention to develop proposals that will be based on extending the 40mph Chilthorne Domer buffer zone to encompass the crossroads," a highway project manager wrote in a letter to Yeovil MP David Laws.
Changing the speed limit is not a straightforward affair as a process including consultation and the advertising of a traffic regulation order must be followed. The project manager also revealed that permission had been given by a landowner to cut down a hedge which creates a visibility problem.
Mr Laws commented on the information by saying: "Once these works are completed, the scheme will be monitored to see the extent to which driver safety is improved. I look forward to seeing the results of this study and hope that the scheme will reduce the number of accidents."
